The Science We Do

We study brain, sex, and gender beyond the binary. Contrasting the binary framework with the mosaic framework—according to which individuals possess mosaics of female- and male-typical characteristics—we investigate how different aspects of gender develop, are expressed across the lifespan, and vary across cultures. We also examine how the gender binary shapes beliefs and behaviors that sustain bias and explore interventions to reduce it. Explore our ongoing projects to learn about the questions guiding our work and the methods we use to answer them.

Discover Your Gender Mosaic

Our research shows that individuals do not fit the gender binary. Rather, each individual possesses a unique mosaic of gender characteristics. Visit our companion site to discover your gender mosaic and see how it changes when you “travel” around the world.
